The Science department continually achieve results in line with or above the national average in all courses. In 2014-15 88% of students achieved at least 1 grade A* to C or equivalent.

We believe our success lies in our commitment to continuously review the courses we offer to ensure that students can opt for the course that best suits their learning style and ambitions for further education. We will always offer the Separate Sciences and the Double Award at KS4, but all other courses are open to change depending on national moves and each cohort that comes to our school. We currently offer BTEC science in the main science time and Health and Social Care GCSE as an option

Key Stage 3

We follow the Activate scheme of learning and resources. Scientific theory is learned and practised through a skills-based approach. The course is broadly divided into the 3 main subject areas.

In year 7

Autumn term Chemistry

Spring term Physics

Summer term Biology

In year 8

Autumn term Physics

Spring term Chemistry

Summer term - Biology

Students are set into ability groupings where ever possible. These groups are reviewed regularly to allow students to be moved according to ability, attitude and effort. The pupils are assessed throughout the course based on their scientific skills using practical and theory based assessments, online testing and traditional end of unit tests

Key Stage 4

We offer a variety of courses at key stage 4 to allow all our learners to pursue the course that is best for them.

Double award is the course that the majority of students study. This covers 2 GCSEs - Core award and Additional award. Each course consists of 4 units exams in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and a CAU (controlled assessment unit). The exams are taken at the end of Year 11. The CAU is taken during lesson time. Separate Sciences is taken by the highest ability scientists in each year group. This consists of 3 separate GCSEs. Each GCSE is made up of 3 exams and a CAU (controlled assessment unit). The exams are taken at the end of Year 11. The CAU is taken during lesson time. Students are assessed throughout the course using traditional end of unit tests as well as written assessments.

BTEC First Award is offered to students who learn best through a modular approach. Students are able to take 2 courses Principles of Applied Science and Applications of Applied Science. Each course is 75% coursework and 25% exam. The exam can be taken at various points throughout Year 10 and 11.

Health and Social Care GCSE is taken an optional course. This is an excellent option for students considering a career in any of the caring professions from child care to medicine. The GCSE is 60% coursework assessment and 40% exam. The exam is taken at the end of year 11.
