Examination Results 2018

GCSE Exam Results – Press Release

Students and staff at Alcester Academy celebrate yet another outstanding set of GCSE exam results.

With the reforms taking place in education, GCSEs have changed significantly. GCSEs now involve students learning more content to a greater depth of understanding. Headline measures have also changed significantly in the past few years, with new performance measures focusing upon progress and achievement across the whole curriculum, rather than the traditional 5 A*-C that so many are familiar with. A pass grade has also changed from to a C grade to a grade 4. Even with all of these changes, we are delighted to say our results have not been negatively affected.

In the new measure ‘Attainment 8’ we achieved a score of 54 points, an improvement on last year’s 53. Our early calculation suggests that our ‘Progress 8’ score has also improved on the outstanding +0.49 achieved last year. Had the 5 A*-C remained as a headline measure, we would have achieved our highest performance ever with 84%.

Our highest performing individuals were:

Alice Leeson (7 grade 9s and 2 grade 8s), Phoebe Lawrence (4 grade 9s, 3 grade 8s, 2 grade 7s and 1 grade 6), Scarlett McGourlay (2 grade 9s, 1 grade 8, 5 grade 7s and 2 grade 6s), Benji Barley (2 grade 9s, 6 grade 8s and 3 grade 7s) and Harriet Gwinnett (3 grade 9s, 1 grade 8, 3 grade 7s and 2 grade 6s).

This year’s results also demonstrate a very strong performance in English and Maths, with 89% in English and 91% in Maths achieving the passing grade 4 (or above). This equates to an impressive 83% of students achieving the benchmark pass in English and Maths combined.

Head teacher, Paul Hyde, said, ‘I am thrilled for the students. They’ve achieved these results through hard work and determination. I know that the vast majority of our students will have secured their first choice places at 6th Form or college as a result of their excellent performance.’

‘It is without doubt that the new qualifications are harder and our teachers really have pulled out all of the stops to ensure that the students have received the very best support.'
